Público, day 1

Público is finally in the newstands. LOst of hours working on this project are now at the readers judgement, and they are, at the end, who pay our bills. Here you are some of the graphics of the first number, waiting for your critiques. Now start the hard part, that on which we don't have a month to develop an issue, but a day.
At the moment , the graphics on Público.es ain't nothing but JPGs, but I can assure you that online and multimedia graphics will be available as soon as possible, when we'll have time to seat around a table and develop a good way to make them. Now, in the rush of the first issue we prefered to wait and develop something better than be on the web from the first day.

Graphics & the City

Now all we talk so much about citizen journalism, a big discussion about the Undergound map of Madrid shows that the wold of infographics goes further than professionales, including the developing area.
The discussion runs around the new design of the Underground Map. This first map is the classic one, used since a lot of years (although there have been some updates with the new stations).
Clicking on the maps you can get the PDF

There have never been complaints about this map. But, anyway, the regional government decided to change it. Estudio Raro was in charge of this change.

The main innovation is that now there are no lines in 45 degrees angles, all are 90 degrees. There have been thousands of complaints about this new map, most of them becasue they don't understand why to change something that works.

But those who have gone further have been the association Amigos del Metro Andén 1, who, now the government has decided to change, they have made their own map, including other public transports.

An example on how people goes beyond governments. Including on infographics.

Bryan Christie, king of medical illustration

Some days ago, somebody told me about Bryan Christie, 3d illustrator, but whose illos are, most of them, infographic pieces with no words. He develops all kind of 3d works: maps, architecture, tech...and also line drawings. But his best are the medical ones, where he deals with color, light and shapes to get clean and clear graphics. One of the few who deal with Poser and get very smart graphics.

Graphics from Pisco

August 28th Robinson Choquetaype (Macktub) uploaded this graphic on his blog

On the upper right corner you can see that the earthquake took place at 18.40, so time for reaction was very short.
Days after, Robinson followed the topic and travelled to Pisco, the most devastated zone, very near from the epicentre, in order to get information about recue teams. At own proposal and developing a great double spread from the infographics department.

To know more details, I'll better let him talk

Data visualization: Modern approaches

The new online communities are changing lots of things of our lives. One of the is that they're increasing the visual culture of the general public, who is getting more used to the new ways to represent complex data. A clasification of all those new ways (some of them are not so new) can be seen on this great article on Smashing Magazine, entitled Data visualization: Modern approaches, which is a must.
