Share

It's not just this blog, everybody does their own picks as the best infographics of 2010. One problem:many of them call 'infographics' to tower-graphics, when most of them are just some decorated texts. But here you are some recopilations:

- FastCo Design

- Good Magazine

- FlowingData

- Mashable

- Design Freebies

- Creditloan.com

- Larry Ferlazzo

... and your own picks, of course!

2001-2010: a decade through infographics

It's nearly new year, so it's time for recopilations! My two cents at lainformacion.com goes on the evolution of infographics in this decade explaining the big events of these ten years. The text is in spanish, but I think visuals are enough. And if you want to read it anyeway, you just have to use Google Translate...

Best graphics of 2010, according to Max Gadney

Share

Max Gadney is a well knwon name in infographics. You would have met him if you use to attend to Malofiej, or you may have seen his name related to infographics and BBC. As he is one of those in the know, I just let him talk and introduce his favourites.

"I think this is excellent - This graphic by David McCandless uses a well-known device - the Venn Diagram - to show similarities and differences in spending cuts proposals from different UK political parties. These are often presented in tables, wheer the similarities and differences are less obvious."

"The second is not one piece of work but is a blog - Junk Charts.
Junk Charts brings a level of critique to the field of information visualisation that is lacking in most of the blogs around. Where most people seem happy to just throw up the latest piece of data art and call it 'awesome', Junk Charts always asks about the purpose of such work. "

"The third best visualisation is Schooloscope by BERG. The important thing here is in the creation of written prose from basic numerical data. Instead of taking the basic government numerical ratings, they have converted these into grammar that tells us if the school is any good."

... and now, three picks of his own...

"Done by BERG , for me at the BBC, where I was the commissioning editor on the project. It is a fantastic piece of work, so, well done you guys. Dimensions allows you to see current or historical events overlaid onto where you live."More here.

"The best 2 WWII Magazine (my weekend hobby) graphics this year were the Nightfighter (one of the first planned , when I started this project 3 years ago) and the Aircraft Carrier - (lots of data research went into this one)."

And if you like what he likes, take a look to his picks as the best of 2008.

Best graphics of 2010, according to Pablo E. Paredes

Pablo will introduce himself:

Mi name is Pablo and I collaborate with Diario INFORMACIÓN (Alicante, Spain) making football analysis articles. For that I use infographics sometimes. I have a degree in Journalism and this year I made a postgrade in Informative Graphics at the UAB (Barcelona).

Now, and being happy to see writers using infographics for improving communication, we can go directly to his three picks as the three best of the year:

Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Messi (Marca)
A comparison between the two stars of the spanish clasico, publiched in the print edition of the spanish sports newspaper Marca.

Apotheosis waka-waka (La Vanguardia)
The second is a graphic of La Vanguardia about a Shakira concert in Barcelona (previously discussed on this blog). It's nice to see how La Vanguardia is really trying (and achieving) to be different in teh spanish infographic landmark.

Dicionário do Surf (i)
The third pick as another show of imagination, creativity, style and good taste of the portuguese newspaper  i.

And now, his three favourites own works of 2010...

A hurricane arrives (Real Madrid)

Towers as lighthouses (Deportivo)
Thanks Pablo for giving me the opportunity to post something about this great team called Deportivo on this blog... :)

Magical hexagon (Real Sociedad)

And this monday... Max Gadney (BBC)

The best infographics of 2010, according to Xan Sabarís

Xan Sabarís, former chief on infographics of the local spanish newspaper Diario de Pontevedra and now ruling the infographics department of China Daily News (what a change!) already chose his favourites for 2008, and now he does again. Comments on graphics are his.

Megagraphic: El Mundo on the Gran Vía of Madrid
One in a million. An authentic encyclopedia. And it's obvous they did an enormous effort with it. Something to keep in your house.
More on La Iguana Ilustrada (Juantxo Cruz's blog, chief of infographics at El Mundo)

Cutting the budgets: do it yourself (The Guardian)
Easy and direct, with a lot of information and makes the reader walk in the 'cutters' shoes. YOu can find very interesting things palying with it.
Click on the image for the interactive infographic

Netflix rents (NYTimes)
The big thing of this graphic is that stereotypes are true. Being a topic aparently uninteresting with the raw data, the infographic converts the information into a kind of sociodemographics lessons of the US.

And now, hs own three picks...

Rythm of the city
Now it's me (Chiqui) talking: I chose this infographic as one of the best of 2010. So I don't have much more to say...

(On we're back with Xan)
This and the next infographic were published in Diario de Pontevedra, and they were the only ones with some (good) feedback from the readers. I'm specially glad with the second one, about saving banks merging in Spain, that, being risky for what readers of the newspaper are used to, was useful for them.

Saving banks mergings

Terracota warriors
I choose it because this was my first feature at China Daily and because of the difficulty of the fact-cheking. I had to use a source abroad, because after a very difficult burocratic process, the chinese sources (the museum where warriors are) didn't want to give any information at all.

Every city, every block

I don't have much more to say than absolutely amazing. This project of The New York Times with United States census is one of the most impressive things I've seen lately. An infographic, a visualization?Words are not enough. Is useful, complete, contains stories... Nothing better than taking a look.

Hans Rosling: 200 countries in 200 years

Probably you have watched this BBC video already, because it has been popping all around the web for some days, and not just in infographics-focused webs.

It's part of the BBC4 documentary 'The Joy of stats', which I'm really eager to watch, but it looks that, according to the BBC's iPlayer, I'm not in the correct region (internet is not so global, actually)

Hans Rosling (somebody already introduced on Infographics News), is teacher of International Health at Karolinska Institute (Stockholm), bacame famous in the visualization world by his tool  Gapminder, that you would know for sure. He also starred on of the most inspiring TED conferences.

Everything is not tradition, it's plagiarism

"Everything is not tradition, it's plagiarism". It's a message written on a wall of the Casón del Buen Retiro, one of the buildings of the Prado Museum in Madrid.
It's not talking about infographics, but makes you think anyway.

The best of 2010 according to... myself

Ok, if I ask you to send me your favorites for 2010, I can't help doing it myself, so here are my picks.

My global favourites

How Mariano Rivera dominates hitters, The New York Times

It's no surprise that I've chosen an infographic by The New York Times, everytime I can I recognize in public my admiration to this department. They are the best and they keep advancing, no relax. This infographic, presented in a video format, mixes video, 3d, and charts with an amazing documentation explaining the hitters of this pitcher. Very complete and informative. Spectacular without harming information at any point. And when Xocas explains how it was done (in spanish), is even more impressive.

Rhythm of a ciry, Diario de Pontevedra

The rhythm of a city' is an infographic by Xan Sabarís published in a little local newspaper in the nortwest of Spain, Diario de Pontevedra. Explains in a clear way how many people there is on a typical strett of the city during a regular day. An approach to publish little local visual stories. Written, documented and visualized by an infographics journalist.

Dimensions, BBC

A wonderful tool to compare actual sizes with Google Maps created by BBC with the name Dimensions. A huge amount of templates such as the Gulf oil spill, the pyramids, Armstrong's moonwalk, the moon or the Glastonbury festival...  Not a classic infographic, but a tool. Useful. Easy to use. Different. Anyone can convert this global tool in an hyperlocal one. How would have been Armstrong's moonwalk if Apollo landed at my home?

And there are still more things I loved... But I have to choose...

My favourites of my own work

One never knows what to choose of his one work, because it's very subjective but....

All the combinations of the WC2010

How did Spain play’ was our bet at lainformacion.com to offer something different for the World Cup.  We estarted doing this with friendly matches and we explained how it was done. Then came NYT and did it ten or 100 times better. But our readers  are not the same as the NYT readers and we had a different focus, so we keep with it til the end of the World Cup. And we won (the World Cup).

NBA demographics

Maybe our readers prefered other similar graphics we produced as All the birthplaces of the Liga BBVA or all the birthplaces of the spanish national team, but this one was a bigger challenge: we neede more zooms, there was a big overlaying.... so it was great to experiment and discover new things of my recent online skills.  The data we got form this was also usful for some postst on my blog at lainformacion.com A Base de Datos.

How to differenciate a burka from a niqab

I also like this for what I learnt creating the graphic. I like to be divulgative with small games, and this was an opportunity. It worked really well in term of visits, so I guess people like that too.

And that's all. Now, it's your turn.
