Publico on Flickr

My former colleagues of the design department of Publico have uploaded their favourite works on Flickr, the photohosting page. On their user, they've created an album with infographics that deserves the visit...

Great comparisons (VI)

OK, maybe it's not too fair to clasify my own work as 'great', but I didn't know I would include one of my graphics on this serie... Anyway, a blog has always a bit of 'autoadvertising'...
This is a piece of a bigger graphic about Pluto, but this part is the only one interesting for the serie. We played with a idea. We converted the Earth into a football (soccer) ball. With that size, we converted the rest of planets of the solar system to the same scale. Then, we placed the sun on the Puerta del Sol (Sun's door means the name, a proper place), the main square of Madrid and placed the planets on their orbits always with the scale we said. And this was the result. It looked for us a good way to explain the astronomical distances between planets...

As usual, fiercest critiques are wellcome

Making of. The 11M judgement graphic

We finally have drawers at Público. This made us to take another look to the great mountains of papers we have create on these six months of life.
Among disastarers we wouldn't like to have seen again and little good things were the sketches for the 11M judgement graphic by Alvaro Valiño.

This is the fnished graphic. A relationships diagram and a table with resolutions which share a color code. The graphic was a breaking news, made the day the judge gave the resolution, but we started thinking on it before. And this is hw we made it.
We had the name of the judged, and, with the terrorism specialist of the newspaper (I'm talking about a journalist, not a terrorist), Óscar López Fonseca, we reviewed the charges and which could be the sentences for each one.

We took the name and we think the way to organizate the relationships between judged, just as we supposed, waiting for the judge and his resolution.

We thought on the style that could have the diagram ad decided that the table should have the same colors. We thought (never seriously) on just using the skecth. We really liked it.

As you can see, there were a lot of changes (if you really look at out, we just used 3-4 faces for the scheme). We were constrcting the relations meanwhile Oscar was reading the sentence the day it was released.
The final result is the one above all. People from the newspaper liked it, many people we asked liked it ant it had a gold at Malofiej and a SND Award of Excellence. We think is a very easy and clear way to explain the information and have the reader informed, that was what whe tried.

MALOFIEJ 2008. The Awards

First of all, sorry for the delay. The internet conection at Pamplona was just utopic.

FIRST AWARDS FOR FIRST STEPS
Sorry for the 'autopromotion', but this time I have to seize the opportunity. One gold, two silvers and 3 bronzes for Público (Spain), having launched the newspapers at September 26th of 2007, made us to be more than glad. The big one was the golden medal for the graphic about the judgement for the bombings of March 11th at Madrid.

The terrosrist plot.Álvaro Valiño

Our department is formed by Álvaro Valiño, Miriam Baña, Ana Landi and myself. 30 years the eldest. And we had help from Jorge Doneiger and Pablo Loscri (Clarín), as consultants for the launching.

Now come the pressure to demonstrate that this is not just one lucky day.

NYTIMES.COM, THE BIG ONE
On the year of 'balls' graphics, its big representer got the Peter Sullivan award, the biggest award of the show. And it wasn't with a graphic made with balls, but for the coverage of Virginia Tech Massacre.
Is a superb job, but I still prefer 'Buy or rent'.

Publico, two weeks later

Two weeks from the first issue of Público and we already have a considerable amount of graphics to judge. At the moment, we are three in the department. Álvaro Valiño, former La Voz de Galicia, Miriam Baña, coming from El Economista, and myself. We have two other people, Susana and Fran, helping with the rush of the frists weeks. As I commented, we're not still at 100%, but it's just a matter of time.
Focusing on the graphics, these are some of the things we're having on the firsts issues.

As I hope you could see, our will is to do graphics which explain the news, on a clear and clean way. Using color with a purpose, and helping the reader to visualize teh information. In sections as Science and Tech we're making an effort to make accesible the complicated concepts that we have to handle on those informations. We still have a long way ahead, but we hope we could go further and further.

Some graphics are uploaded everyday at Público.es, associated to the corresponant news. As commented, going online is just a matter of time.

Público, day 1

Público is finally in the newstands. LOst of hours working on this project are now at the readers judgement, and they are, at the end, who pay our bills. Here you are some of the graphics of the first number, waiting for your critiques. Now start the hard part, that on which we don't have a month to develop an issue, but a day.
At the moment , the graphics on Público.es ain't nothing but JPGs, but I can assure you that online and multimedia graphics will be available as soon as possible, when we'll have time to seat around a table and develop a good way to make them. Now, in the rush of the first issue we prefered to wait and develop something better than be on the web from the first day.
